Roberto’s Story

Roberto is a new client and Navy veteran from southern California. He became a 2nd Class Petty Officer and served as a Plane Captain on the USS Midway for many years. During that time, Roberto got to see the world, including the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Africa, and more. He says his favorite place was Misawa, Japan, because of the amazing food served in the mess hall on base. After his discharge, Roberto worked in various jobs, including a culinary position in a hospital, as he loves to cook.

In 2012, Roberto moved to Albuquerque to live closer to his sister. He worked at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds for seven years before retiring. Roberto’s daughter recently signed him up for Meals on Wheels, so she wouldn’t have to worry about him eating well as he aged. Her grandfather had received Meals on Wheels deliveries in California, so it made perfect sense to get them for her dad!

Roberto says his favorite part of receiving meals is the variety. He receives five frozen meals each Monday, and loves writing out a list of what he received to share with his daughter. As he said, “I enjoy a variety of foods, and I am so excited that MOW provides that for me.” Roberto also appreciates all the fresh vegetables packed into each meal, which he said he would not enjoy otherwise. “It is so great to have so many options to choose from when I open my fridge.”

Your support also provides social connection for Roberto, who looks forward to meeting his volunteers each week and sharing a story or two as time allows. He shared that he is making lots of new friends. Ultimately, Roberto summed it up best: “Meals on Wheels allows me to live happily and independently.” It is an honor to serve this veteran, after his many sacrifices for this country. Thank you for keeping Roberto nourished with the great food and friendship he deserves!
