Kathleen’s Story
Kathleen is a retired teacher and long-time Meals on Wheels client. She moved to Albuquerque from Buffalo, New York, about 40 years ago with her young family. Kathleen went on to earn her master’s degree and teach at multiple grade schools as well as at the University of Albuquerque, before it became St. Pius X.
At the age of 71, while still teaching, Kathleen fell and broke her right hip. No longer able to drive, she found Meals on Wheels and started getting her frozen meals through weekly delivery. Looking back, Kathleen said, “I thank my lucky stars that I found Meals on Wheels back then, I don’t know what I would have done without this wonderful service!”
Kathleen appreciates the connections she has been able to make with the many volunteer delivery drivers she has met over the years. One gentleman who delivered to Kathleen for many years just moved back to California with his wife to help care for her. “I miss him and his smile terribly,” Kathleen said. “He was so kind, but I am glad he can help his wife get better.”
In the next year, Kathleen has plans to move back to New York, to live near her beautiful daughter and 2-year-old twin grandsons. She knows being around them will give her a new lease on life, keeping her active while building wonderful memories. Kathleen will miss her Meals on Wheels friends, however, and the relationships she built here in Albuquerque over the years.
She wants everyone to know that “Meals on Wheels is a wonderful group. People need to ask for and receive help from this great organization and the wonderful volunteers. That is what they are there for.” We could not agree more! Thank you for making it all possible.
