Ruben used to travel a lot. Before retiring from a career as a truck driver, Ruben drove to and from nearly every city throughout the entire state of New Mexico. He knows all the main highways and secondary roads of our state like the back of his hand.
Today he lives a markedly different life. Ruben is single and remains at home most of the time. The only traveling he does now are visits to his doctor. And, with the exception of his visiting caregiver, he doesn’t see many people. So when his Meals On Wheels volunteer shows up every day to deliver his fresh, hot meal, he really enjoys the company and companionship.
As a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, Ruben, in his quiet and raspy voice, said, “It’s the only place I’ve lived. I like it here and plan to stay.” When asked how he came to be a recipient of Meals On Wheels, he said, “My caregiver set up Meals On Wheels for me,” With a soulful look in his eye, he adds, “I’m so glad she did. I probably wouldn’t eat for the day otherwise.”
With a faint smile and bright twinkle in his eye, when asked what he would like to say to our generous supporters like you, Ruben said, “I am so very grateful that you help Meals On Wheels feed hungry folks like me. Thank you for enabling me to eat and live my life.”
